The Ecuadorian government will appear before the International Court
of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague Tuesday to present evidence of the alleged harmful effects of
Colombian coca fumigation on Ecuadorian territory.
Ecuadorian diplomat Diego Cordóvez will appear before the court to argue that Colombia’s spraying of crops has affected Ecuador’s land and people. He stressed that referring to the ICJ was a last resort, as all other diplomatic mediums had been exhausted
Diplomatic relations between the neighboring countries were already strained after Colombia bombed a FARC camp on Ecuadorian territory where guerrilla leader Raul Reyes was hiding.
Ecuadorian Vice-President Lenin Moreno said that Ecuador will not seek to repair relations with Colombia until the governments
make an official apology and can guarantee that such an event will not
occur again.
The Re-election of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa Sunday has put the future of Colombia-Ecuador diplomatic relations in doubt. The election of a new Ecuadorian President would have given strained relations between the two nations a fresh start. Another four year term for Correa will mean that relations will pick-up where they left off.
