Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said Sunday his country will not restore relations with Colombia while he is Head of State.
“We will not restore relations. At least, not as long as I am President,” Correa said nearly 13 months after his country broke off all diplomatic ties with its northern neighbor because of a cross-border attack that killed 26 people in a FARC camp on Ecuadorean territory.
Ecuador gave Colombia five conditions to restore relations, but according to the Ecuadorean President, Colombia’s President Álvaro Uribe has done “nothing” to restore relations.
The demands are about increasing Colombian military on the common border to prevent the incursion of illegal armed groups and the handing over of intelligence information about the alleged presence of guerrillas in Ecuador.
Colombia says it sent 27,000 troops to the southern border to improve security, but Correo denies this.
