More than half of Colombia is affected by heavy rains that have struck
vast parts of the country in the first few days of the rainy season,
the International Committee of the Red Cross says.
According to the ICRC, the heavy rains have caused emergency situations in 19 of the 32 departments, affecting between 8 to 17 thousand families.
The departments that are worst hit by rains and floods are Amazonas, Vall, Cauca, Antioquia and — center of the Colombian coffee industry — Risaralda and Quindío.
The Red Cross warns the heavy rains are likely to cause floods by the country’s two biggest rivers Cauca and Magdalena, which would cause an even greater number of victims.
