A video of Dutch FARC member Tanja Nijmeijer dancing to electronic music in a rebel camp has lead to bemused reactions in Colombian media.
In the footage the rebel appears content to dance a kind of improvised electro-style you would normally see in Europe’s nightclubs in the 1990s, or in embarassing casting auditions for reality television competitions. A group of young FARC rebels in the background look on, apparently unimpressed, as the Dutch rebel continues to writhe around the encampment like a fish out of water.
Nijmeijer, known as “Alexandra Nariño” in the FARC ranks, came to Colombia as an English teacher in the year 2000. She soon became involved with an urban guerrilla unit in Colombia’s capital Bogota, before joining FARC’s rebel ranks sometime during 2002. The Dutchwoman is one of the most visible rebel negotiators at the ongoing FARC-government peace talks in Havana, Cuba. She is wanted by a US court for allegedly participating in the kidnapping of three US citizens and could face several years in prison if captured.
