Police capture FARC member who attempted Uribe assassination

Alias “Dionisio Rayo” who attempted to assassinate former President Alvaro Uribe, has been captured in the department of Meta in central Colombia.

Jaime Aguilar Ramirez, known as Dionisio Rayo, was a key figure of left-wing rebel group FARC’s eastern block and the principal leader of the group’s explosives unit.

“Dionisio Rayo”, brother of extradited alias “Cesar”, was heavily involved in the 2002 attack on the Nariño Palace, in which an attempt was made to assassinate then President Alvaro Uribe.

The rebel leader was making his way to Bogota in a grey Hummer to receive medical treatment when captured, according to the Police report. National Police Director Jose Roberto Leon Riaño described the arrest as a “new and significant blow”.

Aguilar Ramirez has been active in the FARC for 27 years and is wanted on 8 different charges, including crimes of terrorism, homicide of protected persons, terrorism motivated homicide, extortionate kidnapping, extortion, conspiracy to commit crime and rebellion.
