President Juan Manuel Santos became the first Colombian to win the coveted Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Services, the Wilson Center announced on Wednesday.
“Throughout his life, President Santos has been committed to public service by fostering democracy, security and peace in Colombia,” stated the center’s director Jane Harman in an official press release.
The Wilson Center describes their award for public services as an award that “is presented to individuals who have poured their time, talents, and resources into improving the lives and futures of others and in so doing have inspired us all.”
Santos will receive the honor in September, in New York City.
“We are thrilled to be collaborating with the Wilson Center as it bestows this important honor,” said Christian Murrle, President of the Colombian American Association, who will help to organize the Awards dinner in New York.
Santos has now become the third Latin American recipient of the award, after Brazilian Presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff.
Other notable former winners of the award also include former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper,
