Colombia has invested millions of dollars for recuperating sensitive environmental zones damaged by tropical storm ‘La Niña.’
Roughly $37.4 million has been set aside for recovery of vital natural environmental destruction after parts of Colombia suffered sever weather from the annual tropical storm, according to local media.
Director of research institute Von Humboldt Brigitte Baptiste reportedly explained that “to delimit the [ecological zones] is very important, keeping in mind the process of degradation last winter season.”
Sensitive zones characterized by wetlands and paramos (i.e. tropical highland plains) experienced serious repercussions after intense rain throughout the two year period 2010 to 2012.
A joint effort to demarcate and recuperate the effected zones is being led by the Ministry of the Environment, Colombia’s Adaptation Fund, the Humboldt Institute, and the Geography Institute.
