The new international terminal for the capital of Colombia, opened only last year, is already 6 million passengers per year over capacity, said the president of Avianca airlines on Tuesday.
Airlines are having to dock in “remote” parts of the airport and bus their passengers to the terminal, said Fabio Villegas Ramirez, president of Avianca
While Villegas sees the new El Dorado international terminal as a step forward for the country, he claimed it is already insufficient for the number of passengers and therefore creates problems for connecting flights and baggage handling.
According to the Avianca president, the new international terminal, inaugurated in October 2012, has almost the same number of gates as the old terminal, while demand grew much faster than expected.
The airport was designed to take 15 million passengers per year by 2014. In 2012, over 21 million passengers passed through the airport.
