Alan Jara, the former governor of Meta who was released from FARC
captivity Tuesday, told the press that Colombian President Álvaro Uribe
has done nothing for the country’s hostages and challenged him to start
a dialogue with the guerrillas.
“The attitude of President Álvaro Uribe has not helped the release of prisoners,” Jara said, adding that he did not speak from bitterness about his 7-year long captivity, but was analyzing the situation.
“All we hear about is the strength and success of the Democratic Security policy. If the security policy is so strong, will he put the humanitarian agreement back on track?” Jara rhetorically asked.
Jara accused the government of letting the hostages die in the jungle, saying Colombia has “a death penalty by default, which is doing to assure the hostages come home.”
He continued accusing the President of considering the FARC “convenient” and said he had the impression the FARC wants the conservative President to stay in office.
