The operation to release FARC hostage Alan Jara has been suspended
until Tuesday on behalf of the commission in charge of the release,
Colombian opposition senator and mediator Piedad Córdoba said Monday.
Córdoba asked the government to allow members of ‘Colombians for Peace’
back in the mission.
Córdoba told the FARC the mission was suspended for the day, but would leave to pick up former governor of Meta Alan Jara Tuesday morning, according to the schedule that was supposed to be carried out today.
The release of Jara Monday and former Valle deputy Sigifredo Lopez Wednesday seemed jeapordized after Bogotá dismissed both Córdoba and Colombians for Peace Sunday allowing only the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to carry out the operation. Córdoba was allowed back in the mission Monday morning as requested by both the ICRC and relatives of Jara and Lopez.
The Senator asked the Colombian Government to allow the members of Colombians for Peace back in the mission, according the agreements made with the guerrillas and government before the operation.
‘Colombians for Peace’ brokered the release, but were dismissed from the mission by the Government after members of the group accused the Government of breaching made agreements and had military operations going on at time of the release of four hostages Sunday.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) earlier already announced the suspension and had asked the government to please comply with the agreements made, while asking prudence towards the media concerning the operation.
The dismissal of ‘Colombians for Peace’ leaves a successful ending of the operation in insecurity, because it is not according to the FARC conditions that allowed the release.
