Colombia news - final

After months of fierce competition in Colombia’s top soccer league, only Independiente Medellin and Millonarios are left fighting for the Liga Postobon championship.

The two soccer giants face off in a two-legged tie the first of which will be played at the home of Independiente Medellin on Wednesday evening.

Medellin’s players go into the clash as underdogs but will know that a good start in front of their fanatic red supporters at Estadio Atanasio Girardot could go a long way to securing their sixth championship title.

Veteran midfielder John Viafara is well aware of the importance of making a good start on home turf and he is confident his team can outplay the Bogota giants.

“We will win with our football. We have no secrets and we know how they play and they know how we play. It is going to be a good game, Millionaires with their style and Medellin with ours.” he said.

Having dominated for much of the regular season, finishing top of the Primera A table, Millonarios will go into the final as favorites, however they have not won the league title since 1988.

The long wait is one which is providing extra motivation for the Millonarios players with striker Wason Renteria eager to gain the much converted star for the club’s loyal fans.

“I am very happy for the support of the fans. I am happy because the fans crave this star. I came at the right time and we are fighting in the final for our first victory in 24 years. I arrived at the time where we can give that joy to the fan,” said Renteria

The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw, however at Estadio Atanasio Girardot DIM certainly holds the upper hand with eight wins out of 13 matches, Millonarios just winning on two occasions.

The visitors will be hoping for a much better outcome on this occasion ahead of the second, decisive match in the Colombian capital Bogota on December 16.
