Colombia’s new ambassador to the Holy See has presented his credentials to Pope Benedict XVI, during which he asked for apostolic blessing on the on-going peace talks between the government and the FARC.
In a ceremony in Rome Monday, German Cardona Guitierrez asked for an apostolic blessing on behalf of the entire country.
According to a statement from the Colombian embassay, Cardona had “asked that the peace talks, on behalf of our president, Juan Manuel Santos, and the Colombian people, receive your apostolic blessing.”
Cardona continued, “I ask for the interest and that prudence be shown by the Church and its prelates in the peace process which has begun.
“For it to also have full confidence in the ability of Colombia’s government action and management, and to support it through your prayers.”
The Pope has previously called on the Catholic Church to promote peace as the Colombian government and FARC aim to bring an end to the longest running armed conflict in Latin American history.
