Mexico City celebrated living with the Colombian writer and Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez for 50 years by displaying 40,000 inspirational posters throughout the city on Saturday.
Spanish born Mexican artist Vicente Rojo designed the posters containing fragments of the author’s books, such as his best known works “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and “Love in the Time of Cholera,” personal quotes and of those close to him, as well as information about his extraordinary life.
10 historical images of the author were presented, ranging from his youth to his current age of 85, and even a picture of him meeting the king of Sweden in 1982 upon winning the Nobel Prize for literature.
The posters were released as part of the XII International Book Fair in Zocalo institutions sponsored by the Federal District and the National Council for Culture and the Arts.
The move came when Mexican author Jorge Hernandez encouraged the local government to print and deliver the 40,000 posters to Zocalo square in Mexico City. Hernandez also said, “the best way to enjoy Marquez’ work is simply to reread it.”
