A former deputy director of the now-defunct DAS intelligence agency who is in jail for ties to paramilitary groups is sueing the Colombian government for a $250,000, reported local media Tuesday.
Disgraced former intelligence director, Jose Miguel Narvaez, has filed a lawsuit with Colombia’s State Council, the country’s highest administrative court, demanding just over a quarter of a million dollars in compensation. Narvaez allegedly cited damage to his “honor, image and reputation” as justification for the heavy sum.
Narvaez is also seeking an annulment of the judgement that stipulated he could not hold public office for 20 years. The original conviction followed allegations he facilitated the illegal wiretapping of other public officials.
Aside from accusations of illegal surveillance and wiretapping, Narvaez has been under investigation for involvement in the August 1999 murder of journalist and political cartoonist Jaime Garzon and the murder of Manuel Cepeda Vargas, a senator from the Patriotic Union party.
