FARC guerrillas have killed a policeman and injured two others during an attack in Colombia’s troubled southwestern province of Cauca, reported local media Monday.
Patrolman Jhon Jairo Muñoz died Sunday night in the municipality of Argelia when insurgents threw explosives into the local police station, according to Cauca’s police commander Colonel Ricardo Augusto Alarcon.
He also confirmed that two other soldiers were seriously injured in the blast and will be transferred to a hospital in Popayan, the capital of Cauca.
This is the second violent incident that has occurred in the municipality of Argelia since Friday, when an engine explosion killed 27-year-old Lieutenant Jonathan Uribe. Police attributed that attack to the FARC’s 60th front.
“We had not recovered from the murder of Lieutenant Uribe, commander of the institution in Algeria, when terrorists appeared at El Mango,” said Alarcon.
The recent series of attacks in the region coincide with the ongoing peace negotiations between FARC and the Santos administration, set to formally commence October 8 in the Norwegian capital of Oslo, and continue afterwards in Cuba’s capital Havana.
