Colombia news - Gloria

The training ship of the Colombian Navy, “Gloria,” will open its doors to visitors in Spain this weekend.

During its seventh sail around the world, Gloria has made its stop this Friday for three days in Barcelona to let visitors see what life aboard the training ship would be like. The Colombian ambassador in Spain will welcome the ship that provides training in coastal and astronomical navigation, operations of modern communication devices, and sailing maneuvers for Colombia’s sailors.

The ship was constructed during the last years of the 1960’s in the shipyards of Bilbao, Spain and has an alleged crew of 162 sailors, including six foreign officials. Gloria has trained 10,000 marines over its 44 years of existence.

Before making its stop in Barcelona, Gloria gathered in the southwest city of Cadiz along with 50 ships from 20 different countries to participate in the “Great Race of the Bicentennial,” which took place on July 26 to commemorate the Spanish Constitution of 1812.

Gloria will also make stops in France, Italy, Greece, Egypt, and Portugal before making its last stop in Jamaica and returning to its base of the northern city of Cartagena in November.
