Colombia’s capital Bogota extends its ban on carrying firearms in public spaces for another three months, local media reported Thursday.
General Gabriel Pinilla of the Colombian Army’s Bogota-based 8th Brigade said the prohibition had been a success in terms of reducing the city’s homicide rates, claiming a reduction of 18% in the first six months of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011.
The ban on firearms was first introduced on the first of February 2012 by the city government of Gustavo Petro. This is the second time the ban has been extended.
