Colombian opposition Congressman Germán Navas Talero filed charges
against 86 of his colleagues for voting in favor of the referendum
about the re-election of President Uribe.
According to the lawmaker, the 86 coalition Representatives of the House committed a crime by voting for the referendum, while they knew the bill didn’t meet the legal requirements to be passed.
The Polo Democrático congressman says his party never agreed to the bill, because of the doubts concerning the funding of the referendum.
The lawmaker had warned his colleagues about the alleged crime they were going to commit through a petition that was handed to every single Representative before the vote took place in an extraordinary session called by the government.
The 86 members of the House all voted in favor of approving the referendum that demands the possibility for Uribe to be re-elected. The bill was passed 86 – 0 because the opposition boycotted the vote.
