The FARC will not accept an envoy of the Vatican as part of the
commission that is to pick up six hostages the FARC in December
promised to release, Caracol Radio reported Wednesday.
The government — rejecting any foreign involvement in matters concerning the guerrillas — had authorized the Vatican to send an envoy to be the foreign guarantor the FARC demanded as part of the commission to pick up the two politicians and four members of the security forces.
Both the FARC-friendly ANNCOL website and mediator Piedad Córdoba
had already predicted the FARC would reject any involvement of the
catholic church in the liberation process.
According to Caracol Radio, sources close to the guerrillas confirmed the FARC will not accept any involvement of the church, bringing the liberation process to a stand still.
The wives of the two politicians that are promised to be released talked to High Commissioner for Peace Luis Carlos Restrepo about the status quo. They say the government’s already starts shifting towards a compromise with the guerrilla.
