Colombia’s domestic soccer league has been ranked the 17th strongest in the world by a prominent organization that ranks and chronicles the records of association soccer, local media reported Tuesday.
The International Federation of Football History and Statistics uses a point system to determine the relative strength of national leagues and publishes preliminary rankings every July. Their methodology for doing so has not changed since 1991.
With 2900 points, Colombia’s “Liga Postobon” is still behind continental rivals Argentina (6130 points), Brazil (5900 points), Chile (4115 points), Paraguay (3840 points) and Ecuador (3150 points).
The quality of Colombia’s local competition was exemplified on Sunday night when Santa Fe beat Deportivo Pasto to claim their first league title in 37 years.
According to the IFFHS’s analysis, Spain’s domestic competition, commonly referred to as “La Liga,” was by far the strongest team in the world, amassing 7610 points.
