Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos asked the G-20 organization on Tuesday to ‘eliminate distortions’ in food prices and to allow countries that are able to increase food production to do so to avoid food shortages.
“There is no better indicator of poverty (…) than the price of food,” said Santos at the G-20 meeting in Los Cabos, Mexico, where delegates had gathered to discuss sustainable development.
Santos said food security was of great importance for developing countries and that Colombia was one of only eight countries able to increase food production without destroying tropical forests.
“The countries that have the potential should be able to use that potential and increase food production when it is relevant,” Santos said to the delegates.
