Colombia’s national police captured the second highest-ranking member of the Oficina de Envigado Friday, one week after the arrests of three other leaders from the powerful drug cartel.
Police raided a house in Rio Negro, 30 minutes outside of Medellin, on Thursday night and arrested Felix Alberto Isaza Sanchez, alias “Beto,” local media reported.
Sanchez had evaded capture numerous times before, police said, including an escape from a hotel on the Caribbean island of San Andres just as police moved in to arrest him.
Officers had been expecting to find Erick Vargas Cardenas, alias “Sebastian,” the Oficina de Envigado’s chief, according to reports. Instead they found Sanchez, along with a bodyguard, weapons and false documents.
On May 18 police arrested three other prominent members of Oficina de Envigado in Medellin. The drug organization is the descendent of Pablo Escobar’s cocaine empire, the Medellin Cartel.
