Colombian President Álvaro Uribe vowed Wednesday to continue the
government’s ‘Democratic Security’ policy to improve security in
Colombia and promised not to
cut in social programs and infrastructural programs to secure the
further development of the country and its economy.
The president, speaking on the last day of 2008 in Caimito, Sucre — a town hit hard by this year’s second rainy season — emphasizes on the results made by his government over the past few years and praised the security forces for the successes in its fight against leftist rebel groups FARC and ELN. Uribe did not mention the scandal that hit the government and its armed forces concerning the murder on civilians by security forces.
Uribe did mention the pyramid scandal that financially devastated many thousands of families in the south of Colombia. He announced new legislation to prevent situations that allowed pyramid schemes to establish and promised help to those families affected.
The president called on Colombians to have confidence in their country and to work on improving the country to secure future generations can live happily in the country.
Facing a global economic crisis, Uribe reiterated that the government will not cut down on its spending, but on the contrary increase public spending to ensure a financial injection into the Colombian economy and avoid massive job losses.
