The director of Colombia’s ruling U Party has announced his resignation, local media reported Thursday.
“I’m leaving by choice, because I’m tired and I want to do other things,” said Senator Juan Lozano Ramirez.
Ramirez said the decision had nothing to do with Thursday’s removal and disqualification of a U Party governor in a southwestern Colombia district.
Huila Governor Cielo Gonzalez was found guilty of investing nearly $3.4 million of public funds from oil royalties into Tig S.A., an investment firm, in 2007 while mayor of Neiva.
Lozano, who is expected to leave his post May 26, told press he felt like his time as director had come to an end. “I told them I want to go because the task is accomplished,” he said.
Lozano, a Bogota journalist and lawyer has been the General Director of the U Party since 2010. He served as a senior presidential adviser and as Minister for Environment, Housing and Land Development under former President Alvaro Uribe.
