Colombian Vice President Angelino Garzon is in the running to be Director General of the UN’s International Labour Organization [ILO], reported Colombian media.
The Colombian’s candidacy was formally presented in a letter to President of the ILO governing body Greg Vines.
Garzon announced his bid after a speech to the European Parliament’s Trade Committee in Brussels .
The vice president became the second formally registered candidate for the post, following former French government minister Gilles de Robien entrance in to the race.
Garzon is so far thought to have garnered five votes, all of which come from Latin American governments with a position on the ILO Board of Directors, namely Argentina, Brazil, El Salvador, Colombia and Trinidad and Tobago.
As yet the United States’ vote remain unclear, but the U.S. AFL-CIO trade union federation reportedly does not sympathize with Garzon’s candidacy.
Applications close March 9 and candidates will be required to forward their proposals and answer questions before the ILO’s Administrative Trinbunal later this month.
Current Deputy Director General of the ILO Guy Ryder is favorite for the position, although he has not yet formally registered his candicacy.
