Colombia’s deputy Foreign Minister Adriana Mejía Hernández pledged
before the United Nations’ human rights council the country would
strengthen human rights institutions, fight poverty, put an end to all
forms of discrimination and commit itself to recommendations of the
council.
According to the deputy minister, Colombia will accept 69 recommendations of the UN that followed a UN report and the hearing of vice-President Francisco Santos last week, but said some of the recommendations are “unacceptable”.
“The violence which persists in Colombia poses a serious threat to the country’s people. We are confronting these threats with a strengthening of the rule of law,” Mejía Hernández said.
The UN human rights report on Colombia demands the country dismantles existing paramilitary structures and says “the rights of the poor are violated repeatedly”.
