Members of Colombia’s largest guerrilla group FARC have tortured a farmer who refused to help in a bombing using a donkey to carry explosives, the Colombian army said Thursday.
The incident took place in the south west region of Cauca.
According to reports, alleged FARC members hoped to carry out an attack on police in the region.
For refusing to lead the donkey to the intended target, the victim had his mouth sewn shut, fingers amputated, and received multiple lacerations and stab wounds.
The 42 year old farmer remains hospitalized and in critical condition.
UPDATE
Colombian President Jose Manuel Santos denounced the torture and attempted bombing by alleged FARC members Friday, reported local press Friday.
Santos called the incident, “inhumane by so called revolutionaries and defenders of the community. They grabbed and tortured a poor farmer […] because he would not help them in an act of terrorism.”
The beginning of the month saw a series of bombings that left at least 19 dead. The FARC claimed responsibility for at least one attack and are alleged to have carried out the rest.
