As part of the Colombia’s “Year of Lucho Bermudez,” Medellin’s own Symphonic Youth Orchestra of Antioquia will be playing a year long series of concerts honoring the famous composer.
The series, which begins on Sunday March 4th, will pay homage to the famous Colombian maestro Lucho Bermudez as part of the Ministry of Culture’s nation-wide “Year of Lucho Bermudez.”
One of Colombia’s most celebrated musicians and composers, Lucho Bermudez (1912-1994) interpreted classic Colombian music, like cumbia, into ochestral symphonies. He single-handedly spread traditional Colombian music throughout Latin America, instilling cumbia in Argentina, Mexico, and Cuba.
The celebratory year began with performances in his hometown on what would have been Bermudez’s 100th birthday, as well as the establishment of the new Luis Eduardo “Lucho” Bermudez music academy. There will be shows held in Colombian cities throughout the year to commemorate the composer.
An official with Medellin’s Corporation for the Promotion of Music told Colombia Reports that the tributes will be “teaching concerts” since Bermudez taught the world about Colombian music. Following a tutorial and a tour of the various instruments in the orchestra the group will play some of Bermudez’s most famous pieces.
Medellin’s concert will be at 11:00 AM on Sunday, March 4 in the Pablo Tobon Uribe Theater. The series will continue with shows on the first Sunday of every month.
