The extradition of ‘Don Diego’ means the absolute end of the
infamous Norte del Valle cartel, the drugs organization that arose
after the dismantling of the Medellín and Cali cartel in the mid
1990’s, Colombia’s National Police chief Oscar Naranjo said Friday.
The drug lord was extradited to the United States Friday morning. A Black Hawk helicopter took ‘Don Diego’ from his prison to a military airport in Bogotá where he was handed over to DEA officers. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency flew to the United States where he will be trialed for drug trafficking and money laundering.
The extradition of ‘Don Diego’ Murillo was authorized Thursday by Colombian President Álvaro Uribe. The country’s Supreme Court already had authorized it before. The drug lord is widely expected to be flown to the United States this Friday already to stand trial for drug trafficking and related crimes.
Other Norte Del Valle capo ‘Chupeta’ who was captured in Brazil, already is in the United States awaiting trial. Third boss Wilber ‘Jabón’ Varela was shot dead in Venezuela earlier this year.
“This extradition comes with the encouraging news that the fight against drug trafficking is being fruitful, since the price of cocaine in the United States is soaring and the quality of it has been reduced to 46 percent,” Naranjo said, reffering to a DEA report that was published Thursday.
