Top US official visits Colombia

Maria Otero

U.S. Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights Maria Otero arrives in Colombia for an official visit Tuesday.

According to the U.S. State Department, while in the country Otero will travel to Tumaco, a city in Colombia’s southwest coast, close to the border with Ecuador which is of strategic importance for drug-runners.

While there she will visit law enforcement and municipal officials, as well as community figures and farmers.

She will also hold bilateral meetings in Bogota with senior officials and members of civil society on issues such as illicit drugs, counter-terrorism co-operation, law enforcement, human rights, internal displacement, victims and land restitution, and good governance.

Among those senior officials due to meet Otero are Vice President of Colombia Angelino Garzon, Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin, and Director of National Police General Oscar Naranjo, reported El Espectador.

Otero, who is the highest ranking State Department official of Hispanic descent, arrives from Chile, where she delivered a speech on civilian security and democracy at the Economic Commission for Latin America.
