Colombian singer-songwriter Gregorio Uribe, a rising star in New York’s Latin music scene, has announced the release of his debut album “Pluma y Vino” through PR Newswire.
Translated as “Pen and Wine,” Uribe’s album builds a fusion of Latin musical styles around lyrics colored by subjects such as romance and social injustice in his homeland.
The release is the culmination of five years on the New York scene, fronting the 16-piece Gregorio Uribe Band, which has drawn the Bogota native a huge following and included residencies at the likes of Zinc Bar, in New York’s West Village.
In an interview last year with the website Latin Trends, Uribe explained how moving to Australia with his family when he was nine invigorated his interest in the music of Colombia, driving him to write songs on the accordian.
Returning home two years later, Uribe’s passion for Latin music continued to bloom, with Colombian vallenato star Carlos Vives a particular influence.
Today the rhythms of cumbia, curralao and garabato, amongst others, can be heard in his music as he continues to draw praise for his complex songwriting skills.
A proportion of profits from ‘Pluma y Vino’ will go toward Fundacion Alma, a non-profit organisation which promotes arts education among disadvanteged children in Latin America.
The album release shows will take place at Regattabar in Boston on January 20 and Blue Note Bar in New York on January 22.
