Medellin’s newly installed mayor, with the support of the local army brigade, imposed a year-long ban on the carrying of weapons Thursday.
The ban is officially imposed by the army, but was requested by Mayor Anibal Gaviria at the first security council held after his inauguration on Sunday.
The Medellin gun control decree comes amid a national discussion on the banning of carrying weapons that was started by newly installed Bogota Mayor Gustavo Petro and later supported by the national government.
Sergio Fajardo, the governor of the Antioquia department of which Medellin is the capital also decided to ban the carrying of weapons, but prefered a six-month trial period.
