Colombian socialists voice support for prosecutor general

Colombia’s socialist Polo Democratico party has spoken out in support of the prosecutor general following the discrediting of her husband by former governmental figures, newspaper El Espectador reported Wednesday.

The accusations, which concern the controversial role of Prosecutor General Viviane Morales’ husband in the 2004 disarmament of paramilitary groups, were first raised by Colombia’s former peace commissioner Luis Carlos Restrepo. Restrepo is facing criminal charges for his role in faking the demobilization of a non-existent group of FARC guerrillas in 2006.

Alternative Democratic Party president Jaime Dusson Calderon has stated his opinion that those making the allegations against Morales and her husband are “those who want to hide the investigations that are underway into false demobilizations.” According to Dussan, the “far-right wants to affect the course of these investigations.”

The politician added that “there is a suspicious coincidence between the accusations being made against the prosecutor general and what the previous government (under Uribe) did with the Supreme Court.”
