Cartagena’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transsexual (LGBT) community celebrated sexual diversity Tuesday with a colorful parade through the downtown area of the Colombian coastal city.
The city’s third annual March for the Recognition for Sexual and Gender Diversity started in front of the old Circus Theater at 8PM, where men and women proudly carrying the gay flag set out to march the city with pride.
The colorful parade culminated at the Plaza de la Paz, where individuals of all sorts showed their support for the movement, with everything from brightly colored costumed performers and university students to folkloric dance groups and international LGBT community members.
However, there were some reports that the celebration got out of hand, with gunpowder explosions and foam baths, much to the dismay of organizers who go to great lengths to plan the event each year.
Despite the interruptions, the march, which was highlighted with bright flags, colorful banners, and beaming faces, showed that Colombia is alive with pride for their nation’s gender and sexual diversity.
