The mayor of Honda ordered a curfew in the Tolima town Sunday after unhappy DMG investors turned to rioting Saturday and started looting stores.
Nearly 2,000 looting protesters attacked a supermarket allegedly belonging to DMG. Four policemen were severely injured and had to be taken to hospital.
“More than ninety percent of the supermarket and all of its food were taken by the crowd. The only thing that was saved were the shelves and the refrigerators,” Tolima police commander Julio Cesar Santoyotold newspaper El Espectador.
According to the newspaper, the protesters are planning to ignore the curfew and are organizing a massive exodus to the nearby town of Mariquita where a supermarket of the same brand is located.
The mayor will uphold the curfew until the situation has calmed down.
