Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos on Wednesday announced $532 million to be invested in tackling the backlog in the country’s judicial system.
“During the five years following the entry into force of the [judicial] reform, the national government will assign $532 million, $107 million per year with the aim of financing the processes of judicial decongestion.”
However, Colombia’s richest man and president of executive committee of the National Association of Financial Institutions does not agree with the pending judicial reform.
“We do not agree with allocating permanent funding from the budget to the justice system,” said Luis Carlos Sarmiento according to financial publication Dinero.
“We have seen an increase in spending for justice and instead of improvements, there is a deterioration in the quality of justice.”
Sarmiento said that he would be in favor of temporary financial support, having defined aims in order to achieve concrete results.
