colombia news - operacion jaque

Caracol’s television series “Operacion Jaque” (Operation Checkmate) has been nominated for an International Emmy Award for “Best TV Movie/Mini-Series,” a first for the TV film industry in Colombia.

Operation Checkmate, as the name suggests, revolves around a rescue mission of 15 people held captive by the FARC in the Colombian jungle.

The series was based on real-life Operacion Jaque, a five-year plan to locate and rescue former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, three Americans and eleven Colombian policemen held captive by Colombian guerrilla group FARC.

The covert effort involved numerous governments, diplomats and intelligence services, and a vast network of spies, military advisers and soldiers, plus high-tech surveillance measures.

Operation Checkmate was recorded in high-definition (HD) in the Colombian jungle, under the direction of Spaniard Silvia Quer, and stars actors Marcela Mar, Cristina Campuzano, Julian Arango, Luis Fernando Montoya, and Roberto Cano.

It is a co-production of Caracol TV, Paraiso Films, Pentagrama Films, and TVE.

The International Emmys are the most important awards for the television series worldwide, and are considered to be the ‘Oscar awards of television.’ Organized by the International Academy of Arts and Sciences the award celebration is held every year with a celebrity gala during which recognize excellence in television programming produced internationally.
