The International Committee of the Red Cross will assist in the mediation for the release of the 10-year-old daughter of a mayor, who was kidnapped Thursday in northeastern Colombia.
A Red Cross representative from the Auraca department, Adolfo Beteta, met with the girls parents to begin organizing the mediation process, which they hope will culminate with the release of the 10 year old girl, Nohora Valentina Muñoz Gutierrez.
The young girl, who is the daughter of the local mayor, was kidnapped from the municipality of Fortul while on her way to school with her mother.
The kidnapping has been widely condemned throughout the country with Colombia’s interior minister calling it a “crime against humanity” and Colombia’s Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon offering a reward of over $50,000 for any information leading to the release of the young girl.
Despite reports by local media that the girl was kidnapped by left wing guerrilla group FARC, it has still not been confirmed who was responsible for the attack. Both FARC and the National Liberation Army (ELN) are active in the area where the kidnapping took place.
