Colombia’s ex-spy chief ceases cooperation with justice: Report

Colombia news - Jorge Noguera

Disgraced ex-director of Colombia’s intelligence agency DAS Jorge Noguera, convicted for the paramilitary infiltration of the agency, has refused all cooperation with justice, Caracol Radio reported Wednesday.

In an eight-page letter sent to Prosecutor General Viviane Morales, Noguera announced that he will not appear before a court or defend himself in the pending cases against him. The former DAS director reportedly also announced he has sacked his attorneys and refuses to have one appointed by the court.

“I will not take part in this ghastly game with the appearance of justice, in which there is no possibility of an investigation or impartial justice,” Noguera wrote.

The former DAS director explains that the pending cases against him, for illegal wiretapping and the murder of a union leader, ignore justice.

“I’m not going to legitimize my presence with corrupt and unjust actions of the prosecutor general and the Supreme Court as was mistakenly done in the past.”

Last week, the Supreme Court determined that Noguera was responsible for the paramilitary infiltration of DAS. He was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison for the illegal use of privileged information and criminal conspiracy.

Noguera is also held responsible for the murder of a university professor who was assassinated after Noguera passed information about the academic to paramilitaries.
