Colombia’s minister of the interior stated his opposition Tuesday to a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban all forms of abortion in the country, Colombian media reported.
Minister of the Interior German Vargas Lleras made the announcement in response to the demands by Conservative Party members that a constitutional ruling in 2006 that made abortion legal in specific cases be overturned, making abortion completely illegal in Colombia. Abortion is currently legal in the case of rape, the congenital malformation of the fetus, and the endangerment of the life of the mother.
Vargas Lleras has announced his opposition to the Conservative Party proposal saying that he would prefer for the 2006 ruling of the court to be upheld by Congress.
Vargas Lleras announced his personal opinion saying, “I believe that we should respect the courts decision to allow this practice in various cases.”
Although the minister personally believes the legalization of abortion should be upheld, he maintained the right for congress to vote on the issue.
