The left-wing guerrilla organization FARC set up over a dozen billboards on the road to San Vicente del Caguan, in the southwestern department of Caqueta, imposing an overnight curfew, Colombian media reported Monday.
The billboards, distributed along the main access road into town, prohibit travel, by vehicle or on foot, from 6PM to 6AM. They also state that any motorcyclist wearing a helmet will be fined $265.
In the last line, the Teofilo Forero Mobile Column of the FARC took responsibility for installing the signs.
According to Caracol Radio, one of the billboards was found only 11 miles from the Cazadores Battalion, which is responsible for security in the area.
Caqueta’s Police commander Carlos Vargas assured the public that the billboards were only erected to generate fear before the upcoming elections, and that the FARC have no real authority in the area.
“This is in fact a publicity stunt, because they have no capacity to do harm,” he insisted.
