There are more registered voters than there are citizens in 56 of Colombia’s municipalities, according to a report by newspaper El Tiempo.
Recent cross-checking done by the electoral tribunal indicates that the number of persons is much higher in the electoral census than the population census.
The President of the National Electoral Council Joaquin Jose Vives identified the problematic municipalities, stating that “there are 56 municipalities distributed in Antioquia, Atlantico, Boyaca, Caldas, Cesar, Cundinamarca, La Guajira, Magdalena, Meta, Norte de Santander, Santander, Sucre, Tollima, Valle, and Vaupes.”
A study by the National Electoral Council revealed that in the municipality of Cabuyaro, in the central Colombian department of Meta, there are 3,876 listed inhabitants but 5,095 eligible voters are reported.
However, the head of the National Electoral Council argued that the problem has already been fixed in many municipalities by removing huge numbers of registered voters who had since died or were no longer living in the area.
