Colombia’s Miguel Angel Lopez showed the world on Sunday he’s a rider to be taken seriously, winning his second stage at the Vuelta d’España.
Lopez of the Astana Pro Team had already impressed when winning the 11th stage and confirmed he is one of Colombia’s up and coming climbers securing a second victory in the 15th.
The Colombian escaped from the group with tour leader Christopher Froome at six kilometers from the finish in the Sierra Nevada.
He then overtook Adam Yates, taking the lead in the stage at only five kilometers from the finish in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
The Astana climber’s escape ripped apart the Froome team and forced the drop of Spanish cycling hero Alberto Contador, who couldn’t keep up with the persecution.
Lopez’ victory resolved all doubt he could’ve been a one-hit wonder after his 11th stage victory, showing the cycling world the 23-year-old Astana rider must be taken seriously.
