Bernardo Moreno, ex-President Alvaro Uribe’s former chief of staff, has submitted a request to be freed from jail, where he is awaiting trial for his involvement in the illegal wiretapping scandal.
According to El Espectador, Moreno’s lawyer filed a complaint against the Superior Court of Bogota, claiming that the detention order against his client was irregular.
The attorney argued that the evidence against Moreno was “not enough” to warrant detainment while awaiting trial.
Moreno is charged with the illegal interception of communication, abuse of power, conspiracy and fraud for his alleged participation in the illegal wiretapping carried out by Colombian intelligence agency DAS of Supreme Court judges, journalists, human rights workers, and political opponents of the former president’s administration.
The former chief of staff was sent to jail July 30 after wiretap victims themselves appealed the Supreme Court’s decision to allow Moreno to await trial at liberty.
