U.S. courier company Fedex announced its entrance into Colombia’s domestic market after 18 years delivering internationally to and from the South American nation.
Fedex’s Colombia manager Eduardo Berrizbeitia said that after starting direct operations between the United States and Colombia in mid-May, he saw there was space in the market ground to for the company to have its own fleet of trucks to serving Bogota, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga, Cartagena, Cali and Medellin, according to newspaper El Espectador.
Fedex has formed a strategic alliance with Colombian company Interrapidisimo with the aim of having a nationwide presence. Berrizbeitia said the unification process should be completed within 10 years but the with the momentum of the country, could happen earlier.
The beginning of domestic operations will create up to 200 direct jobs including a call center which will attend to national and international clients.
The company acquired a fleet of vehicles to serve the packages, heavy cargo and flowers market. Currently Fedex operates a daily flight from Memphis to Bogota with stops in Miami, Valencia – Venezuela, and Panama with an A300-600 aircraft with a capacity of 84,000 lbs. The main goods carried are flowers, but also textiles, car parts and other non-traditional products.
