Colombia’s coalition parties clashed with opposition Liberal Party
about the reparation of victims of the ongoing conflict in the country.
The liberals argue victims of state violence are being discriminated.
After years of resistance, the Colombian government gave in to Congress
demands and included victims of state violence in the country’s Law of
Victims, which gives victims of the conflict the right to claim
compensation.
The coalition is satisfied, but the Liberal Party objects the several limitations imposed on victims of state violence to claim reparation. A victim of an illegal armed group can claim reparation from state institutions, while a victim of state violence will have to claim that right in court.
“The Government insists in allowing only the judicial way and we insist the administrative way should be guaranteed to these victims, under the right of equality,” Liberal Party spokesman Guillermo Rivero said.
