A police patrol shot and wounded two soldiers in Valle del Cauca in what authorities are labelling a “friendly fire” incident.
The police unit was patrolling the rural part of Jamundi, in the south of the department, after the community launched an alert saying hooded and armed men had been seen in the area, according to Caracol Radio.
The commander of the soldier’s unit Colonel Luis Edgar Cifuentes told El Espectador the soldiers had received orders to move into the sector known as ‘El Llanito’ when they were surprised by the attack.
Cifuentes said he presumed the attack was accidental and blamed it on bad communication.
The prosecutor general has launched an investigation into the incident and ballistics, photography and topography experts are currently at the scene of the confrontation trying to piece together the events.
The two injured soldiers are currently in the Valle de Lili health clinic where they are apparently set to make a full recovery.
