Venezuela began an examination of the health of a FARC leader and musician for the purpose of extradition to Colombia, various media reported Monday.
The health of Guillermo Enrique Torres, alias “Julian Conrado,” is currently being investigated to see if he is fit for transport to Colombia, according to Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro.
Conrado was a close associate of deceased FARC commander Raul Reyes as well as a leader in his own right. Conrado also wrote and performed a number of songs about life in the FARC earning him the nickname “el cantante” (the singer).
Maduro said that his country would “act in accordance with national and international law.”
The guerrilla was captured last June in Venezuela, and there have been rumors of pleas for asylum from Conrado. Conrado served on the FARC’s negotiation council during the 1998-2002 peace talks with the Colombian government.
