The National Federation of Coffee Growers announced that Colombia produced 40% less coffee this June than during the same period the previous year, Caracol Radio reported Thursday.
Colombia produced 471,000 bags of coffee this June, down from the 780,000 bags harvested in June last year. Exports of coffee also declined with 572,000 bags exported this June, compared with 648,000 bags the year before, a 12% decrease.
The federation blamed the lower production on the heavy rains and floods Colombia experienced last winter, which decreased the number of coffee blooms available for harvest this year.
Global coffee prices have risen this year, reaching a 34-year high in April. Coffee prices have since declined from the April spike.
