A former official of the Social Security Institute (ISS) was sentenced to five years in prison for fraud and extortion, Colombia media reported Tuesday.
Omar Rojas Niño was fraudulently contracted as an economist to assess the status of the debt a company named Friendship Tours owed to Social Security.
These sorts of activities are usually conducted by banks, but Niño took it upon himself to lower the debt owed from $8,500 (COP15 million) to just under $5,700 (COP10 million). He then gave the company a false receipt verifying the payment which was not actually made.
The Technical Investigation Team (CTI), a division of the Prosecutor General’s Office, arrested Niño on May 5.
